New York Jets Advance Over Weak Cincinnati Bengals Passing Attack; Dallas Blitzes Philly, 34-14
January 9, 2010 by dwil

Chad Ochocinco looks somber as time runs out on Cincinnati's season.
The New York Jets played the most predictable game in playoff history —- and won. Other than the long dropped pass by Braylon Edwards, the Jets ran exactly three pass patterns. Mark Sanchez took three-step drops and ran bootlegs to pass. Shonn Greene ran to the left every rush until the fourth quarter. Thomas Jones ran up the middle.
That’s it.
Rex Ryan got to smile when he didn’t deserve to and the Jets got a win they didn’t deserve.
All thanks to Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer and Bengals kicker Shayne Graham. Graham miss field goals from 35 and 29 yards ans Palmer consistently missed receivers throwing high most times, behind them others. Palmer wasted a brilliant, 21-carry 169-yard rushing performance by Cedric Benson with his inaccurate passes.
Though the game was billed as the Jets rushing attack and defense led by Darrelle Reavis versus Chad Ochocinco and Palmer. Reavis was consistently beaten by other Bengals receivers but Ochocinco never seemed to run a pattern with any more than one break against the Jets corner, and even those were of the skinny post variety or fade stop patterns. all of which made Reavis’ job on Ochocinco much easier. Palmer attempted no passes to a tight end and the Bengals never ran a pattern with a double move.
Still, Cincinnati was only down 17-7 when Graham missed the 35-yard field goal. New York took advantage and scored thanks in large part to a Sanchez bootleg pass to tight end Dustin Keller for 46 yards and put the Jets in the red zone. With the score 24-14 and 5:47 remaining in the game Graham missed the 29-yard attempt and the game was effectively over.
The vaunted Jets defense never stopped Benson and didn’t get near Palmer until the Bengals final drive, when he was sacked on consecutive plays.
Despite the predictability of the Jets offense Sanchez was 12-15 for 182 yards and a touchdown. The Jets rushed 41 out of 56 plays for only 171 yards, outrushing Benson alone by only two yards.
Marvin Lewis will have a long offseason wondering what might have been as his team had every opportunity to easily win Saturday’s game. Going into next season the Bengals must seriously consider whether or not to move forward with Palmer as their quarterback, add at least one more high-quality wideout, and either draft or acquire a tight end. The Bengals defense is relatively solid but was decimated, especially at the linebacker position. However, Lewis will likely look to replace Tank Johnson in the middle and use him in a backup role and add another linebacker to get a bit younger at that position.
Also look for Cincinnati to have another kicker.

Dallas jumped on Philadelphia early and often. The Eagles Sean McDermott dialed up many more blitzes much than he did in Week 17, but Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garrett and quarterback Tony Romo were ready. By picking up the extra rushers, Romo was able to wait an extra beat or two for his receivers to come open and burn the Eagles secondary. Dallas’ receivers are the best in the NFL in yards after reception and continued the pattern against Philly.
After Mike Vick completed a 76-yard catch-and-run completion to rookie Jeremy Maclin, the Cowboys his the Eagles for 10 unanswered points to open up a 17-7 first half lead. Then, on a handoff, Vick never quite got the ball in Leonard Weaver’s stomach and fumbled. Dallas recovered at the Eagles’ 18-yard line. Romo completed a a flanker screen to Miles Austin who scored to complete a three-play 18 yard drive to make the score 24-7 with 1:55 left in the half.
Then, with :51 left Leonard Weaver was stripped by Brady James after a pass reception and fumbled. Dallas recovered at their own 42. Shaun Suisham converted a 48-yard field goal to make the score 27-7 at the half. DeSean Jackson was held without a catch in the game’s first 30 minutes.
And when Felix Jones broke a 73-yard run for a touchdown to make the score 34-7 with a little more than five minutes left in the third quarter, the game was effectively over.
Next week Dallas travels to play Minnesota.

Was looking forward to seeing the Bengals kick some Jets ass but they didn’t bother to show up. Didn’t know what was up with Palmer because as you mentioned he wasn’t accurate at all today. The entire team looked nervous for some reason, and looked like they had no life to them. Jets got a free ride into the playoffs, and now we’re going to hear more about how they are some great underdogs.
Watching the Philly game now. What a total BS pass interference call that went in favour of the Cowboys. The official 5 feet away from the play sees that it was no call, but then a flag comes flying in from some far distance.
As I’m typing this Vick just threw a TD! haha take that!
Yeah, but they called Witten for offensive pass int. after Romo was outside of the tackle box on the boot…. With Ed Hochuli’s crew calling the game, you can bet on some bad calls (notice how he failed to whistle the play dead on Romo’s pass that his the lineman’s head?)
dwil
Ryan is full of shit, but he ain’t crazy, for real. He surely knows he got a freebie today. At the presser, did you notice how many times he mentioned Benson’s buck 69, without that even being the question? Three by my count.
My God, can the commentating be any worse for this Eagles-Cowboys game? This is incredibly nauseating.
Yeah, Chris Collinsworth doing the colored, I mean color commentary.
I’ve had it on mute since halfway through the 2nd quarter.
Well this one is over. Hopefully Reid now understands that you can’t win in this league without a proper running game.
I don’t think I can stomach anymore shots of Jerry and Bush laughing it up. Hopefully the games tomorrow are a little better. I guess i’ll be cheering for the Chargers or Saints now to win it all.
Man I hate the NFL.
You see those garbage personell fouls. But they throw Mcnabb to the ground and nothing.
Fuck I get sick of seeing black QBs hit late and no flags.
“Well this one is over. Hopefully Reid now understands that you can’t win in this league without a proper running game.”
Don’t worry Monsoon………..Reid will figure it out one Mcnabb is gone.
Just like he does all the time when the Eagles have the backup QB in.
Anyway the Cowboys look great playing a one dimensional team with a beat up OL.
But the thing is the Vikings have no beat up OL. They aren’t one dimensional, they don’t have a small front 7. And when you hit their QB late a flag will be thrown.
Anyway I really don’t have a problem with the Eagles losing.
After Farve was signed this preseason I already knew what the deal was for who would win.
I just didn’t want Mcnabb to get killed behind Reid’s dumb playcalling this year.
Plus I didn’t want Vick to get killed in that dumbass wildcat shit.
So even if they are gone from the eagles this year they can be healthy and go to Miami, Denver, and etc.
Dwil its funny how every year the good ole boy analyst and writers swear Palmer is the an all-pro QB.
But the boy is garbage………………he can’t do shit without a dominate running game.
And he has never won anything. Not even a playoff game.
Seriously, how can Collingsworth talk with his mouth full like that??
LOL!!!!
You too funny Miranda.
Stop, Miranda. LMAO.
Carson Palmer isn’t seen as a franchise QB anymore by many in the mainstream media. Ever since he got hurt a few years ago, he is afraid of getting hit in the pocket. A lot of his passes were thrown HIGH against the Jets.
I don’t know Patrick.
Fools in the media such as Peter King still had him ranked top 10 I believe.
O-
Yeah they do. Hopefully not anymore, though. No, wait…. Let me say this: Palmer had no tight end, no receiver who would run convincing patterns across the middle, and the play-calling was sadly predictable. It looked like Ochocinco knew he was a decoy and there was no other receiver who stepped up.
That said, Palmer flat choked. all those high passes were inexcusable. Maybe the first couple to shake the nerves, but after that, it’s time to settle down and play like a pro.
The Jets were so predictable it was pitiful – on both sides of the ball. And the Bengals coaching staff could find no way to take away the people Sanchez threw to and could find no way to keep running the ball until the Jets choked on Cedric Benson,
I swear they should have run dude 35 times, made those fools cheat , run Ocho on a couple double moves and, if Palmer could get him the ball, it would have been game time.
But no. They called a scared game and got beat like a scared team. Period.
Next year Marvin Lewis better realize what he needs and get it, and either open up the offense fully, or treat Palmer like he’s Mark Sanchez.
…”treat Palmer like he’s Mark Sanchez…”
LOL
Injury-prone Carson Palmer has convenient excuse…

However, some are saying Carson just don’t have it…

Excuse me……………did Brady get caught on tape doing Mama jokes about the Pats defense?
I really hope Mcnabb is traded this offseason to another team. He will go into next season with fans rabidly asking for Kolb to be the starter, and the second guessing will not be good for him. He needs a fresh start somewhere with a coach with a more competent offensive playbook.
I hope Vick gets a starting role on another team next season too. If Buffalo took a chance with TO then I can see them taking a chance with Vick.
I don’t know what was worse: OchoCinco collapsing on the sidelines or Dubya cheesin’ it up w/ Jerry’s boys…S to the M-H!!!
Yeah, I am one to give QB’s multiple chances especially when they are in a sh*t situation on a bad team. But Carson Palmer was terrible. And a buck 69 on the ground for Benson? Dang what a waste.
I don’t know how many times it has been said that Reid should get a real running back. What’s the deal. Having said that, he should have had Vick behind center a lot more times than he did and just pulled a Buddy Ryan. Just roll the ball to the middle of the field and ask him to do what he do. Sigh.
The less said about the Cowboys skybox the better. Ugh.
I’m a Jets fan…
