Cutler Traded to Chicago

April 2, 2009 by dwil

Jay Cutler did not go to NFL Siberia – Detroit – after all. Cutler was traded to Chicago for Kyle Orton, two first round, and a third round draft choice. The first and third round choices will be dealt in this year’s NFL Draftand the Broncos will gat the Bears 2010 first round choice. According to Associated Press and NFL.com reports:

NFL.com’s Steve Wyche reports that the Broncos will receive first-round draft picks this year and in 2010, a third-round pick (84th overall) this year and quarterback Kyle Orton in exchange for Cutler and a 2009 fifth-round selection.

The Broncos were trading Cutler on his terms, and there was no shortage of teams lining up to take a crack at acquiring the 25-year-old Pro Bowl passer.

Cutler had asked for a trade last month after his relationship with new coach Josh McDaniels soured. Their relationship began to disintegrate when McDaniels broached a potential trade of Cutler for Matt Cassel earlier this offseason.

Interestingly, recently-released left tackle Orland Pace has also joined the Bears. This pick up is said to be Bears head coach Lovie Smith’s move. However, the trade for Cutler is said to solely be general manager Jerry Angelo’s idea.

Well, looks like the Bears finally have a “household name” at QB. But at the same time, who’s he going to be throwing to? Torre Holt? Marvin Harrison? Devin Hester?

This move won’t automatically put them in the playoffs. They still have to solve the WR part of the equation.

    Good point, GrandNubian!

Picking up Orlando Pace may help that o-line out. They could make a run at taking the NFC North depending on how the Vikes handle next season.

This story is bigger up here right now than the Governor getting indicted.

    Real talk.

I think Chicago gave up too much for a guy who doesn’t have many accolades and accomplishments under his belt.

    Sweet-
I know y’all are trippin’ about Bloggo and his cronies, but everywhere else peeps are asking why y’all are trippin’ because that ish was a forgone conclusion.

    He Gone!

    monsoon-
I was thinking the same thing….. and the Chiefs got Vrabel and Cassel for a 2nd round choice?!

How could the Lions not get him….how!!??

Sometimes I hate my B team

    Ill-
I do not understand that. If they got Cutler for the first choice, they could have had their QB – allegedly – and some other team would have been really happy…. unless no one really wants to take a chance on Staffird being Cutler #2.- all arm and a questionable decision maker.

    I agree with ya fam.

I don’t like the Georgia QB like that. and while I’m no expert of any sort, my SEC addicted Auburn fan eyes think that Matt Stafford is overrated. The Lions have the picks to give up which aurgulby would be higher then the potential Bears ones in the future, and would have had the “Day 1 qb”

I mean I can understand the Broncos not wanting the number 1 overall pick in the draft, but was there that big of a difference between picks 18 (Bears) and 20 (Lions)?

Detroit can’t give up 2 first round picks because what happens when they’re picking in the top 5 again next year?

    then you’re way overpaying

HAHA Dwil ya’ll know this an Obama stimulus package for the bears.

Anyway the Mckaskey’s didn’t disappoint me…..these fools gave up all these picks for Cutler…………for him to throw to what???

Unless he can turn into Mcnabb and make these crappy WRs look good my boy Lovie is done at the end of the year.

Anyway even a person born and raised in chicago, F the bears and Cutler. I will just root for them until Lovie gets the axe.

I like the trade for the Bears. When you have been starving for a QB as long as the Bears have, you make this move. There are simply too few young QB talents, and drafting QBs is highly unpredictable. Gotta go with bird in the hand over two mid-to-late 1st rounders in a bush.

Sure, there is no Brandon Marshall, but there is some D and Matt Forte to reduce the pressure to make plays.

Unless you are the Eagles, most teams do end up getting their guy that #1 receiver. Maybe a stop gap vet this year (don’t know if Tori Holt really has anything left), and something real next year. Also, interested to see Devin Hester and Greg Olsen respond the first year. Olsen and Desmond Clark were a decent TE tandem, and if Clark gets phased out for a younger Olsen, I wouldn’t be surprised if Olsen can net 1000 yards in a breakout.

GN, I’d be very surprised if the Bears don’t make the playoffs. Get that #1 receiver, and you have a SB contender.

Good point MODI…..but I think that teams will stack the box to contain Forte and dare the Bears’ current WRs to beat them. Cutler can deliver the ball but on the other side of the equation is can the Bear’s current WRs get the separation and get open?

On the other hand, this may be the year that Hester has a “break through” season and grab 50 balls and 7 TDs, barring injury. But If i’m the Bears’, I still go after a legitimate #1 just to make sure.

    Boney:
    Point taken…

From a fan standpoint I just don’t want to see watever rookie qb the Lions get suffer a horrible fate of pain
