The LA Lakers’ Yellow Brick Road
May 10, 2008
I have to admit that I am usually a Laker-hater. So when I looked at the remaining teams left in the play-offs, I started to become quite concerned about Phil Jackson’s empty thumb being empty no more. Here’s the scenario that has me shaking:
Lakers beat the Nuggets, a team that was fortunate just to make the play-offs, followed by…
Lakers beat the Jazz, the only team seeded #5 or lower to pull an upset, followed by…
Lakers beat the Hornets, who were supposed to lose to Dallas or San Antonio/Phoenix, followed by…
Lakers face Orlando in the Finals, who matches up well with the Celtics and may beat Detroit if Chauncey stays out, but are not at all ready for the Finals and match up poorly with the Lakers.
That would be four rounds of the Lakers facing teams just happy to go one round further in the play-offs than they truly deserved. And yes, I know Utah is a little iffy to put on that list, and the Hornets are a two-seed. But would you have believed me two weeks ago if I told you the Lakers could win a championship without facing San Antonio, Phoenix, Boston, OR Detroit?
By the way, I will be super-busy next week, so apologies for my absence to any Pistons/Magic fans waiting for recaps.
