Michael Wilbon Update

January 30, 2008

wilbon1.jpgMichael Wilbon is back at his home in Scottsdale and is planning on playing golf this weekend. The effect of the angioplasty apparently gave Wilbon an energy surge and Mr. Wilbon wanted to return to work as early as today. However, he was convinced by his doctors, wife, and friends to follow doctor’s orders and relax until his doctors give him clearance to resume his duties as a columnist at the Washington Post and a co-host with Tony Kornheiser on the ESPN-produced afternoon television show, Pardon the Interruption.

Early Monday morning Mr. Wilbon complained to his wife of chest pains and was taken to the hospital where is was found that he had suffered a mild heart attack.

    Hey Dwil,

Sad story about Ryan and I am glad Wilbon is getting better. Yet, I wanted to ask if you could write something on this piece from aol fanhouse blog and the article by Michael David Smith and the lack of diversity at the Super Bowl.

    His statement was :

I was at Giants coach Tom Coughlin’s press conference today, and by my unofficial count, there were 162 members of the media in the room at the time Coughlin was speaking.

And, also by my unofficial count, 14 of those members of the media were female and eight were minorities. The other 140 were white men. At least eight of the 22 who weren’t white men were on-air TV people, meaning that while you might see a diverse set of sports media faces when watching television, there isn’t much diversity in the sportswriting world.

I’m not sure why that is. There are certainly many women and minorities who are interested in sports, and there are certainly many women and minorities who are good writers. So why aren’t newspapers, magazines and web sites employing more of those writers?

Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against white men – some of my best friends are white men – but it is a little odd to look around the room at a Super Bowl press conference and see a crowd about as diverse as Rush Limbaugh’s audience.

Wilbon needs to sit his ass down and follow his doctor and wife’s advice. I understand wanting to feel invincible but heart surgery is nothing to mess with.

Wow Wilbon is a true soldier, it takes a great deal to sit at a desk and write uninformed articles and then get on tv and yell back and forth about absolutely nothing.

He better alter his diet or this won’t be the last heart attack he gets.

    Harvey-

He is chillin’. Turns out there’s no golf in his near future….. some walking, yes, golf ———– NO!

Wilbon took very little time to recover . He’s already back to writing, describing his life altering experience, and one of the most impactful persons to reach out and help through his toughest days was… Jeff George?!?

I am so glad to know that you are doing well and back on PTI. You and Tony really make my day and I look forward to watching you guys every day. Get well and one question, are you permanently staying in Arizona or are you heading back to Washington, D.C. any time soon?

Got something to say?
